Objectives
- To improve the quality of officiating within the SRA Membership
- To ensure the supervision and advancement of the junior officials
The SRA mandate is to provide the grassroots officials with mentorship (coaching) to help them become stronger officials.
The mentorship program has a senior official go to the rink to work with a crew of officials. The mentor’s job is to work with the officials for two games. The mentor will go on the ice for the first game and coach the officials on positioning, signals, rule knowledge and confidence. **Note the mentor will not be in a referee uniform and will not be responsible for making calls during the game.
*** CSA Approved helmet and visor must be worn***
The mentor will then watch the officials from the stands during the second game to provide constructive feedback on what the officials are strong at while providing further coaching on how they can continue to improve.
Procedure
- Selected Level 2, 3 and 3+ officials will be assigned one set of minor hockey games per month where they will be sent as a mentor.
- The assignments will be completed by email or phone.
- All mentors will be required to provide written feedback to the official at the time of mentoring. All mentors must report back to the Jr. Vice President with an electronic version of the supervision no later than 72 hours (3 days) from the completion of the game otherwise will be considered late. If the supervision is not received within 5 days of the game, it will be considered a no show.
- Fines will be: Late paperwork - $25.00 No-shows - $75.00
- Failure to complete the required number of mentorship games (4 nights) will result in loss of playoff assignments.
**All officials are encouraged to supervise more games than are assigned in the mentorship program. With the NEW RULES EMPHASIS, we all can use all the coaching we can get. As a team, we will make the game the best it can be!
